Grey Shack started the way good rock bands do: in college, in Chennai, in 2007. Two weeks after forming, they entered a city-wide band competition as their first ever gig — and won it.

Nearly two decades on, that energy hasn't gone anywhere. The band's sound pulls from heavy blues, classic rock n' roll, grunge and a streak of funk — loud enough for a festival field and loose enough for a beach bar.

In 2014, Grey Shack won Harley Rock Riders' national band hunt and were flown to Austria to play European Bike Week, Europe's biggest motorcycle festival, sharing the bill with The Temperance Movement. The following year, they played the Hornbill International Rock Contest in Nagaland. Rolling Stone India has followed the band from their early singles to Alchemy, which it called their "great big comeback."

They've always done things their own way. In 2018 they co-organised a completely self-financed concert with Thermal And A Quarter, one of the bands they grew up idolising — reported as the first show of its kind in Chennai.

Three studio albums in — Step Outside (2012), Alchemy (2018) and Inn Gloom (2025) — Grey Shack are still doing what they've always done: unapologetic rock, played live, with no two shows the same.
